How to sign your New York title when selling your vehicle

The registered owner of the vehicle must complete the following easy steps:
  1. Always sign the back of the title where indicated by “Seller’s signature”.
  2. Second, print (don’t sign) your name on the back of the title where it reads “Seller’s name (print in full)”.

How to get a duplicate title for my vehicle

If the vehicle was last titled in a state other than New York, you must apply for a duplicate title in the previous state in which your vehicle was last titled.The registered owner of the vehicle must do the following steps:
  1. If eligible, complete the online certificate of title replacement form, or
  2. Fill out the New York Application for Duplicate title.
  3. You can choose to do one of the following options: Bring your duplicate title application to your local New York DMV, or, Mail your application to the NY division of motor vehicles at:
